History North German Confederation After the Austro-Prussian War, the entire German coastline was controlled by Prussia and its allies (blue). The State of the Teutonic Order (whose flag is shown here) greatly influenced the history of Prussia, which became the dominant German state and the source for most of the new war ensign's visual elements.
The red line marks the southern border of the Northern German states. The Mainlinie (German for "Main-line") refers to the historical and political boundary between northern and southern Germany along the River Main. The line delimitates the spheres of influence of Austria and Prussia in the German Confederation during the 19th century.
States of the German Confederation. The states of the German Confederation were member states of the German Confederation, from 20 June 1815 until 24 August 1866. On the whole, its territory nearly coincided with that remaining in the Holy Roman Empire at the outbreak of the French Revolution, with the notable exception of Belgium.

The North German Confederation , was first a military alliance of 22 states of northern Germany, and later a federal state. It was preceded by a Zollverein, a customs union that allowed free trade among most German states. The Confederation started in August 1866, and the Kingdom of Prussia was the leading state. On July 1st 1867, the North German Constitution made the alliance a federal state.
