The Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918 is a 12-volume series covering Australian involvement in the First World War. The series was edited by C. E. W. Bean, who also wrote six of the volumes and was published between 1920 and 1942.
The Australians began to enter this great battle on 25 March, when the 3rd and 4th Divisions were sent southwards towards the Somme by train, bus and lorry. The first clash occurred on 26–27 March at Hébuterne, south of Arras, where the 4th Brigade repulsed the Germans.

The Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918 was edited by Charles E W Bean (1879-1968). Charles Bean was a schoolteacher, journalist, barrister, war correspondent and a historian. He was chosen as the official historian to write up the official account of Australian Forces in the First World War.
