Brief Life History of Osburga. When Osburga FitzOslac was born about 0811, in Sussex, England, her father, Oslac of Hampshire Ealdorman of the Isle of Wight, was 27 and her mother, Baisa, was 24. She married Æthelwulf King of Wessex on 10 January 0829, in Picardie, France. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 1 daughter.

Osburga or Osburh was the first wife of King Æthelwulf of Wessex and mother of Alfred the Great, "a religious woman, noble both by birth and by nature". Osburga's existence is known only from Asser's Life of King Alfred. She is not named as witness to any charters, nor is her death reported in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.

Although there is some tradition holding her to be an early 11th-century abbess of Coventry Abbey, it is suspected that her cult predates the Viking Age. A 14th-century note in MS Bodley 438 mentions an early nunnery at Coventry.

Asser writes only a few lines about her and doesn’t tell us much.
Osburga's existence is known only from Asser 's "Life of King Alfred". She is not named as witness to any charters, nor is her death reported in the " Anglo-Saxon Chronicle ". It is presumed, but nowhere recorded, that she was also the mother of Alfred's older brothers Æthelstan of Wessex , Æthelbald of Wessex , Æthelberht of Wessex , Æthelred of Wessex , and of his sister Æthelswith ...
