Otto Ludwig Preminger was born in a German-speaking conclave of Wiznitz, Poland (later the Ukraine) on Dec. 5, 1905. His father, Markus Preminger, was a Galician Jew who had been appointed as a public prosecutor by Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Josef I.
