James Hepburn, the only son of Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Earl of Bothwell, and his wife, Agnes Sinclair, was born in about 1535. His parents divorced when he was a child and he was brought up by his great-uncle, Patrick Hepburn, bishop of Moray. Hepburn was sent to Paris to finish his education.
Patrick Hepburn 2nd Lord Hailes, 1st Earl of Bothwell was appointed Great Admiral of the Kingdom for his life on 10 September 1488. On 13th October in the same year he had a Crown charter of the lordships of Crichtoun and Bothwell, in the King's hands by reason of the forfeiture of John Ramsay, formerly Lord Bothwell.

Adam met his end on the battlefield in 1513, leaving behind his infant son, Patrick Hepburn, who would go on to become the 3rd Earl of Bothwell. Under the 3rd Earl's guidance, the House of Bothwell continued to flourish.
