The founder of Columbia University 's Bureau of Applied Social Research, he exerted influence over the techniques and the organization of social research. In 1926 he married the sociologist Marie Jahoda.

While sociology is often described as a non-experimental discipline, a literature survey shows that all forms of experimentation are practiced: indirect experimentation, quasi-experimentation, controlled experimentation, laboratory experimentation.
