He was captured by Confederate cavalrymen under Brigadier General Turner Ashby on June 6, 1862, after a failed attack on Jackson's forces in the Shenandoah Valley. The capture caused a stir and a controversy among his former comrades and the press.

He studied painting at the Slade School of Art and spent from 1902 to 1908 travelling around Europe, where he visited many museums. On returning he settled in London, where his compositions began to incorporate Cubist elements in 1910.
