Dirichlet lehrte in Berlin und Göttingen und arbeitete hauptsächlich auf den Gebieten der Analysis und der Zahlentheorie .
Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet was a German mathematician who made valuable contributions to number theory, analysis, and mechanics. He taught at the universities of Breslau (1827) and Berlin (1828–55) and in 1855 succeeded Carl Friedrich Gauss at the University of Göttingen.
Johann Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet ( 13 février 1805, Düren – 5 mai 1859, Göttingen) est un mathématicien prussien qui apporta de profondes contributions à la théorie des nombres, en créant le domaine de la théorie analytique des nombres et à la théorie des séries de Fourier. On lui doit d'autres avancées en analyse mathématique.
Abstract. Dirichlet was born on February 13, 1805, in Düren, a town midway between Aachen und Cologne, where his father was town postmaster. His grandfather was a textile manufacturer from the nearby French-speaking Belgian town Richelet, so that the origin of the family name Lejeune Dirichlet is easily explained as “Young from Richelet”.
