When her brother, Philip Christoph, disappeared in Hannover in 1694 in mysterious circumstances Aurora von Königsmarck set out to learn what had happened. Following her initial lack of success she sought the help of Duke Anton Ulrich of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in Wolfenbüttel and of Elector Frederick August in Dresden given that her brother was in Saxon service.

The story – as brief as we can tell it – is that a dashing Swedish soldier of fortune, Count Philip Christoph von Königsmarck, entered the service of Elector Ernest Augustus of Hanover, and then entered the bedchamber of his daughter-in-law, Sophia Dorothea of Cele.

Known for his romantic relationship with the princess, which is evidenced by numerous love letters now kept at the University of Lund, he was captured and mysteriously vanished from historical records.
