Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis est né à Saint-Malo en 1698. Il apprend la musique, la philosophie, puis montre un grand intérêt pour les mathématiques. Il est élu à l’Académie des sciences en 1723 (section de géométrie) à l’âge de vingt-cinq ans. En 1728, il se rend à Londres, découvre les idées de Newton qu’il est le premier savant à répandre en France.
