Despite Badoglio dismissing rumours of a ceasefire on 8 September 1943, the newspapers announced the surrender of Italy on 9 September. As soon as Mussolini was voted out of power in July, Berlin made it known it would not ignore the betrayal of Badoglio’s government. Due to internal opposition, Badoglio resigned from his post in 1944.
