He was elected to succeed John III , probably just after the latter’s death (July 574), but was not consecrated until June 575, so that the see of Rome was vacant for almost 11 months.

Hace 5 días · In 2005, Pope Benedict XVI, while maintaining the crossed keys behind the shield, omitted the papal tiara from his personal coat of arms, replacing it with a mitre with three horizontal lines. Beneath the shield he added the pallium, a papal symbol of authority more ancient than the tiara, the use of which is also granted to metropolitan archbishops as a sign of communion with the See of Rome.
