Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, KG, KT, GCB, GCH, PRS, FRSA was the sixth son and ninth child of King George III and his queen consort, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. He was the only surviving son of George III who did not pursue an army or navy career. He was known for his liberal views, which included reform of Parliament, abolition of the slave trade, Catholic Emancipation, and the removal of existing civil restrictions on Jews and Dissenters.
Prince Frederick William Henry Augustus of Prussia (German: Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich August; 19 September 1779 - 19 July 1843) was a Prussian royal and general. Born on Friedrichsfelde Palace , he was the youngest son of Prince Augustus Ferdinand of Prussia , the brother of King Frederick the Great , and Margravine Elisabeth Louise of Brandenburg-Schwedt .

Augustus was born at Buckingham House currently known as Buckingham Palace, in London, England, as the sixth son and ninth child of King George III and Queen Charlotte. He was christened on 25 February 1773 in the Great Council Chamber at St James’s Palace by Archbishop of Canterbury Frederick Cornwallis. His godparents were Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Duke George Augustus of Mecklenburg, and Louise, Princess Charles of Hesse-Kassel. As a young boy, Augustus was tutored at home before being sent to the University if Göttingen in Germany in the summer of 1786 alongside his brothers Prince Ernest and Prince Adolphus. In 1805, during the Napoleonic War, he served at home in Britain as Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant of the "Loyal North Britons" Volunteers regiment.
In 1815, Augustus became the patron of the Jews’ Hospital and Orphan Asylum. Later in life, the Duke was elected as the president of the Society of Arts in 1816 and held the position until his death. He was also the president of the Royal Society between 1830 and 1838 and had an interest in biblical studies and Hebrew. In 1838, Augustus gave a speech where he spoke of the compatibility of science and religion.
While in Italy, Augustus met Lady Augusta Murray. The couple married secretly in Rome on 4 April 1793. They married secretly for a second time at St George’s, Hanover Square, Westminster on 5 December 1793. This was in contravention with the Royal Marriage’s Act 1772, therefore their marriage was not valid under this law. Augustus remarried to Lady Cecilia Letitia Buggin on 2 May 1831. This marriage was also in contravention with the Royal Marriage’s Act 1772 making their marriage not valid under this law. Due to this, Cecilia was never known as The Duchess of Sussex. The couple did not have children together.
The Duke of Sussex died of erysipelas at Kensington Palace on 21 April 1843 at age 70. He didn’t want a state funeral and he was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery on 4 May 1843.
