Prince William Frederick of Gloucester was born on 15 January 1776 at Palazzo Teodoli, Rome where his parents William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh (1743-1805) and Maria, Dowager Countess Waldegrave (née Walpole) (1736-1807), were living in exile after incurring George III's displeasure for marrying without his consent in 1766.
