The Samoan Islands are an archipelago covering 3,030 km 2 (1,170 sq mi) in the central South Pacific, forming part of Polynesia and of the wider region of Oceania. Administratively , the archipelago comprises all of the Independent State of Samoa and most of American Samoa (apart from Swains Island , which is geographically part of the Tokelau Islands ).
Samoan males traditionally perform the fa'ataupati (slap dance), usually performed in a group with no music accompaniment. Other types of dance are modern dance by the younger generations. Traditional Samoan dance is arguably the one area of Samoan culture that has not been touched by Western Civilization.
