Shown here aged eighteen, seductively dressed and posed in a sumptious interior, her reign was dominated by war with the French and her failure to produce an heir. She had twelve children, none of whom survived beyond infancy and many miscarriages.
Anne of Denmark. Published 5th July 2016. Anne was the second daughter of Frederick II, King of Denmark and Norway. Her father had failed to re-establish the Kalmar Union with Sweden, but despite that setback, Denmark’s influence in Europe was growing as northern Germany and Scandinavia became bulwarks of Protestantism.
Anne was born on 12 December 1574 at the castle of Skanderborg. Her birth came as a blow to her father, King Frederick II of Denmark, who had been hoping for a son. Anne's mother, Sophie of Mecklenburg-Güstrow, however, was only 17. Three years later she did give birth to a son. He was the future Christian IV of Denmark.
