Meiningen (German: [ˈmaɪnɪŋən] ⓘ) is a town in the southern part of the state of Thuringia, Germany. It is located in the region of Franconia and has a population of around 26,000 (2024). Meiningen is the capital and the largest town of the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district.
Meiningen ist umgeben von einem bewaldeten Hügel- und Bergland mit überwiegend landwirtschaftlich genutzten Tälern und Ebenen. Im Norden und Osten befindet sich das Vorland des Thüringer Waldes, im Westen die Rhön, im Süden schließen sich das Grabfeld und im Südosten das Obere Werratal an.

Meiningen, city, Thuringia Land (state), central Germany. It lies along the Werra River, between the Thuringian Forest (Thüringer Wald) and the Rhön Mountains. First mentioned in 982 and chartered in 1344, it belonged to the bishops of Würzburg (after 1008) and the counts of Henneberg (after 1542) before it passed to Saxony in 1583.
