When Princess Johanna of Saxe-Gotha Altenburg was born on 1 October 1680, in Saxe-Altenburg, Germany, her father, Herzog Friedrich I. von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg, was 34 and her mother, Magdalena Sibylla von Sachsen-Weissenfels, was 32. She died on 9 July 1704, in Strelitz, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany, at the age of 23.
Johanna Magdalena was the only daughter of Duke Frederick William II of Saxe-Altenburg and his wife Magdalene Sibylle of Saxony, the daughter of Elector John George I of Saxony. She became an orphan at an early age when her parents died in 1668 and 1669. She quickly became a pawn in the hands of her family.

Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (30 November [O.S. 19 November] 1719 – 8 February 1772) was Princess of Wales by marriage to Frederick, Prince of Wales, eldest son and heir apparent of King George II. She never became queen consort, as Frederick predeceased his father in 1751.
On 20 June 1702, Adolphus Frederick II married secondly to Princess Johanna of Saxe-Gotha (1 October 1680 – 9 July 1704), a daughter of Frederick I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, and Magdalena Sybille of Saxe-Weissenfels, who was his half-niece. There were no children from this marriage.
