Family and early life. Alexei was born into the noble Orlov family, presumably in Lyutkino (Liutkino), [1] which is now in Tver Oblast, on 5 October [ O.S. 24 September] 1737; the son of Grigory Ivanovich Orlov, governor of Novgorod, and brother of Grigory Grigoryevich Orlov. [5] .
