It was one hundred years ago, on August 1, 1922, that Charlotte, Duchess of Valentinois, became the Hereditary Princess of Monaco by decree of Prince Louis II. The illegitimate daughter of Prince Louis, Charlotte was born in distant Algeria to a woman of far from noble origin.

  4. Prince Louis II died in 1949 in the Prince's Palace and is buried at the Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Monte Carlo, Monaco. His daughter, Charlotte, had ceded her succession rights to her son, Rainier, in 1944, at which time he became hereditary prince. Thus, when Louis II died five years later, he was succeeded by his grandson, Rainier III.

  5. The Hereditary Prince(ss) of Monaco is the title given to the heir apparent or heir presumptive of the Monegasque throne, since its official creation on 15 May 1882. Traditionally, a male Hereditary Prince is also given the title Marquis of Baux .
