European Union citizenship is afforded to all nationals of member states of the European Union (EU). It was formally created with the adoption of the 1992 Maastricht Treaty, at the same time as the creation of the EU. EU citizenship is additional to, as it does not replace, national citizenship.

They are essential factors in the formation of a European identity.
EU citizenship is a unique concept. If you are a national of one of the 27 EU countries, you’re automatically an EU citizen too. As an EU citizen, you enjoy certain rights and benefits that are distinct from national citizenship. For instance, an EU citizen has the right to live, work and study anywhere in the EU.
