Princess Sophia Matilda of Gloucester was the daughter of Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh and Maria, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh. She was a great-granddaughter of King George II.
It may then have passed into the collection of the sitter’s brother, William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester (1776-1834), for it was bequeathed to Queen Victoria by his widow, Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester (1776-1857) and incidentally daughter of George III.
Princess Sophia Matilda (1773-1844) was the niece of George III, daughter of his brother Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Maria, Countess Dowager of Waldegrave. Sophia never married nor had any children. She lived at New Lodge in Winkfield, near Windsor in Berkshire, died on 29 November 1844 and is buried in St Georges Chapel, Windsor.
