Raissa Samojlovna Calza (née Gourevitch; 15 December 1894 – 24 January 1979) was a Ukrainian dancer who became a prominent classical archaeologist of Roman portraiture. When she was young, she fled to Italy and France following the Russian Revolution .

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of her death, the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica organized at the beginning of December a conference in memory of this extraordinary archeologist of Russian Ukrainian origin.

In this paper the rich scientific production of Raissa Calza, which includes about forty books, guides and articles, will be analyzed. The first part will attempt to outline the cultural context in which the scholar was educated, from her youth readings to her studies with Charles Picard in Paris.

Telling Raissa Calza’s life (born in Gurevic) means analysing an entire century of our history, full of people and various events. Both her own personal and professional existence, from her debut as a ballerina during Tsarist’s Russia to her consecration as an ancient art historian, are indissolubly bounded to her lifelong companions (Krol’, De Chirico and Calza).
Podría decirse que Raissa Calza, dada su familiaridad con los materiales y la época, se ha dejado llevar de la intuición. Intuición en todo caso análoga a la que le llevara en tiempos a atribuir algunas piezas a ciertos personajes y que hoy, aceptada por todos, se considera ya «genial intuición».
