The son of a former circus clown turned grocer and a cleaning woman, Red Skelton was introduced to show business at the age of 7 by Ed Wynn, at a vaudeville show in Vincennes. At age 10, he left home to travel with a medicine show through the Midwest, and joined the vaudeville circuit at age 15.
The Red Skelton Show premiered on 30 September 1951. It was one of the first variety shows to make the successful transition from radio to television and one of the longest running variety series. For two seasons Red continued his radio show while also doing his TV show. The series originally aired in a half-hour show on NBC.
