  3. The plan to attack Imphal originated with Lieutenant-General Renya Mutaguchi (1888-1966), a veteran of campaigns in China, Malaya and Singapore. He led three Japanese divisions and one Indian National Army division. Mutaguchi was stubborn and quarrelled with his divisional commanders during the campaign.
