He was succeeded in the remaining titles by his nephew, Robert, the 6th Earl, only son of Robert Brudenell, third son of the 3rd Earl. The 6th Earl's only son, James, 7th Earl , gained fame for his role in the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War .

Robert Brudenell (20 September 1726 – 20 October 1768) was a British army officer and Member of Parliament. Brudenell was the third son of the 3rd Earl of Cardigan and Elizabeth Bruce and a younger brother of the 1st Duke of Montagu and 4th Earl of Cardigan and the 5th Earl of Cardigan .
Biography. Robert Brudenell was born posthumously on 25 April 1769 in the Parish of St George, Hanover Square, London, the son of the Hon. Robert Brudenell, and Anne Bisshopp. His father was son of George Brudenell, 3rd Earl of Cardigan, and brother to 4th and 5th Earls of Cardigan. [1]

Robert Brudenell was a keen cricketer who made eight known appearances in major cricket matches between 1790 and 1793.
