Bridging the gap between European Modernism and Abstract Expressionism Robert De Niro, Sr. (1922-1993) deftly blended abstraction and representation, cleverly referencing European masters from Delacroix to Matisse. Characterized by his use of line, gesture, and movement, De Niro’s work is grounded in the act of painting and drawing.

But the art market of post-war France offered little opportunity for De Niro. He returned to the United States and continued to paint in relative obscurity.
Robert De Niro, Sr. (American, 1922–1993) was a painter associated with Abstract Expressionism, who often blended gestural abstraction with representation. Born and raised in Syracuse, NY, he went on to study at the famed Black Mountain College, and later in Provincetown, MA, with Modern master Hans Hoffman .
