ROBERT ARTHUR JAMES GASCOYNE-CECIL, fifth Marquess of Salisbury, born at the family seat, Hatfield House, on 27 August 1893, eldest son of fourth Marquess. After spending his early childhood at Hatfield he went to school at Eton and thence in due course to Christ Church, Oxford.

Salisbury, Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 5th marquis of (1893–1972). Conservative politician. Cecil entered Parliament in 1929 and served as junior minister at the Foreign Office. He resigned in February 1938 in support of Eden's opposition to opening talks with Mussolini.
