In 1808 a claim to the earldom but not the property of the 22nd Earl of Crawford was inherited by the 6th Earl of Balcarres (1752-1825) and in 1848 this earldom was confirmed to his son the 7th and 24th Earl. The Fife estate was sold in 1791 by the 6th Earl to his brother Robert Lindsay (d. 1836), who also bought property at Leuchars (Fife).
