Robert M. La Follette, Jr. (1895–1953), was elected in 1925 to fill his father’s unexpired term in the Senate and was reelected three times thereafter, serving until 1947. He generally supported U.S. Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, and he drafted the congressional reorganization bill….
Independent and impassioned, La Follette championed such progressive reform measures as regulation of railroads, direct election of senators, and worker protection, while opposing American entry into World War I and condemning wartime restrictions on free speech.
