Robert Mapplethorpe wurde 1946 als drittes von sechs Kindern einer katholischen Arbeiterfamilie geboren. Nach dem Abschluss der Schule ging er auf Wunsch seiner Eltern an das Pratt Institute, eine Kunsthochschule in Brooklyn.
