There are fascinating insights into O’Connor’s veneration for Sir Robert Peel, and his claim in 1846 that ‘for five years Peel has led an incipient Chartist Movement’ (pp. 272–3). O’Connor published a fulsome obituary of the former premier in 1850, and Peel was even added to the Chartist portraits issued by the Northern Star .

Peel is credited for coming up with the idea of Bentham, Colquhoun, and Fielding, following his advice on the significance of police to the parliament. As a result, Peel spearheaded the earlier development of the police force.
