Smirke’s original design – inspired by the architecture of the ancient Greek world – comprised a huge quadrangle open to the air (now the Great Court ) surrounded on all four sides by galleries for sculpture, small objects, natural history collections and library spaces.

He already had a considerable reputation as resident architect of the Office of Works and famously was responsible for the General Post Office and British Museum.
