Sir Robert Smirke by William Daniell, after George Dance (1809) Robert Smirke (1780-1867) was appointed architect of the new King's College in 1829. He was knighted in 1832. He already had a considerable reputation as resident architect of the Office of Works and famously was responsible for the General Post Office and British Museum.

Sir Robert Smirke RA (1 October 1780 – 18 April 1867) was an English architect, one of the leaders of Greek Revival architecture, though he also used other architectural styles. As architect to the Board of Works, he designed several major public buildings, including the main block and façade of the British Museum. He was a pioneer of the use of concrete foundations.
In the original Robert Smirke Great Court design, the courtyard was supposed to be a garden. However, from 1852 many bookstacks were built, and along with the Reading Room it became the home of the library department of the Museum.
