Alexander Stewart (1699–1781) was an Irish landowner who grew rich by inheriting a fortune from Robert Cowan, a former governor of Bombay. His son Robert became the 1st Marquess of Londonderry . 4 de dic. de 2022 · Alexander Stewart (1697 or 1699 – 22 April 1781) was an Irish landowner and ancestor of the family of the Marquess of Londonderry. He was the son of William Stewart, of Ballylawn, near Manorcunningham, in County Donegal. In 1731, on the death of his brother Thomas, he inherited the property at Ballylawn.

Alexander Stewart (1699-1781) married his cousin Mary, sister and heir of Sir Robert Cowan (d. 1738), through whom he inherited property in County Londonderry, and he also bought lands in County Down, acquiring the manors of Newtown and Comber in 1744.
