He is best known for his roles as Ronnie DeVoe in BET 's miniseries The New Edition Story and Tyree in the film Straight Outta Compton .

As of 2010, two New Edition descendants were recording and touring: Bell Biv Devoe, and Heads of State, featuring Brown, Tresvant, and Gill. On May 3, 2011 New Edition issued a press release on their official website announcing that all six members were reuniting as New Edition to kick off the 30th anniversary celebration of "Candy Girl" with their fans.

Later, Bell, along with Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, and Ronnie DeVoe formed New Edition. The group began a career in 1978 that has spanned more than 30 years. After the departure of Brown, Johnny Gill joined the group in the mid-1980s. Before Gill joined the group, Bell was originally the oldest member of New Edition.

In 2017, Truitt co-starred as young Ronnie DeVoe in the BET mini-series "New Edition." The three-night television event chronicling the legendary music group set an all-time ratings record for the network. Also that year, Truitt appeared as Arlo Hastings in the Syfy original series "Superstition."
