I. Roscoe Mitchell Jr. was born August 3, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Roscoe Mitchell Sr. and Ida Carter. The family lived on the corner of 60th and State Street, near Washington Park, which at the time was an epicenter of black cultural activity for the Bronzeville neighborhood in Chicago’s South Side.
