Samuel M. Blatchford (March 9, 1820 – July 7, 1893) was an American attorney and judge who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from April 3, 1882, until his death in 1893. 5 de mar. de 2024 · Samuel Blatchford was an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court (1882–93). Blatchford graduated from Columbia College (later Columbia University) in 1837 and served as private secretary to William H. Seward until attaining his majority.

Samuel Blatchford was born and educated in New York. He enrolled in Columbia College at thirteen and graduated at the top of his class. He practiced admiralty and international law for 25 years when he was appointed a federal trial judge in 1867. Five years later, Blatchford was elevated to the U.S. Circuit Court.

Blatchford developed a reputation for preparing summaries of United States circuit court cases, and served as reporter of decisions for the Circuit Court in New York. In addition, he developed a successful admiralty and patent law practice.
BLATCHFORD, SAMUEL (1820–1893) Samuel Blatchford had been a federal judge for fifteen years when chester a. arthur appointed him to the Supreme Court in 1882. Like Horace Gray, Arthur's other appointee, Blatchford had initially made his mark on the profession as a reporter.
