The twenty-four year old native of Concord had been in Lexington when Revere and Dawes had arrived with the word that the British Regulars were on the march. Whether Dawes and Revere knew him personally is unclear.

The three rode on together and since Prescott knew the dwellers along the route he was valuable in assuring them of the genuineness of the alarm.

In the resulting confusion, Dawes and Prescott escaped but Revere did not. He faced several intense minutes of questioning but was eventually let go, without his horse.
