Samuel Putnam (October 10, 1892 – January 15, 1950) was an American translator and scholar of Romance languages. He authored Paris Was Our Mistress, a memoir on writers and artists associated with the American ex-patriate community in Paris in the 1920s and early 1930s.

This article explores the early reception of the Spanish avant-garde in the United States through the analysis of the work of the American literary critic Samuel Putnam (1888-1950), and frames his output as part of a new form of cosmopolitan criticism in fashion during the twenties.
Unsurprisingly, Samuel Putnam, himself a translator of the novel, who in my estimation has produced one of the best English-language renditions, published in 1949, called it the worst English translation ever made of a famous novel.
