Shaykh al-Islām (Arabic: شیخ الاسلام) was the highest ranking Shiite position in the Safavid period until the Pahlavi period. Shaykh al-Islam was in charge of hisba affairs, removing and appointing judges, attending coronation ceremonies, and issuance of permissions and scholarly certificates.
