Brock (1875–1960) was one of a trio of illustrators, the others being Sidney Paget and Frederic Dorr Steele, who put an artistic stamp on the Sherlock Holmes stories that survives to this day.

The look of Huston’s film was also in part influenced by the early novels and stories of Raymond Chandler, whose first-person observations are often so detailed they outdo the movie camera (and well before the camera-like objectivism of the nouveau roman ).
