Sigvard Bernadotte. The Swedish prince Sigvard Bernadotte (1907-2002) was an internationally recognized designer, illustrator and industrial designer. In 1929 Bernadotte saw the exhibition of Gunnar Asplund in Stockholm which was the breakthrough of functionalism. This inspired Bernadotte to act by the ideals of the functional design.
Sigvard studied at Lundbergs school and in1926 became the first of the Bernadotte family to earn a bachelor’s degree. The same year he enrolled in the Uppsala University. An avid reader, he indulged himself in numerous books, especially those about the history of art and politics.

Sigvard (1907-2002) was Prince of Sweden (from birth) and Duke of Uplandia (Uppland) until 1934. He was also a noted designer as Sigvard Bernadotte.He was created Prince Bernadotte and Count of Wisborg in the nobility of Luxembourg in 1951.
Finally settling down a bit at age 43, Sigvard Bernadotte teamed up with Acton Bjørn to establish the cleverly named Bernadotte & Bjørn industrial design studio in Copenhagen. That was 1950. As Scandinavia’s first company dedicated exclusively to industrial design , you can’t really understate what a ground-breaking and influential move this was.
