In his almanac for 1612 and book Mundus Iovalis of 1614, Simon Marius in Germany reported his discovery of moons around Jupiter, which he started writing down in late 1609 in the Julian calendar, which translated to 8 January 1610 in the Gregorian calendar in use by Galileo in Italy. Simon Marius’s discovery of the moons of Jupiter , which were described in his 1614 book (Fig. 5.1 ), were not published in wide circulation for years after their discovery. In December 1609, Marius used the telescope of his patron Fuchs von Bimbach and saw three “stars” that moved with Jupiter.
Simon Marius wurde am 10. Januar 1573 in Gunzenhausen geboren. Wie Stadtarchivar Werner Mühlhäußer nachweisen kann, war Großvater Michael Mayr ein Büttner und Ratsmitglied. Vater Reichart (später: Reinhard) fungierte 1585 als Amtsbürgermeister und war somit höchster Repräsentant der Stadt. Die Mutter war Veronica Fischer aus Cronheim.
Simon Marius ( 10. ledna 1573 – 26. prosince 1624) byl německý astronom. Narodil se v Gunzenhausenu, ale téměř celý život prožil v Ansbachu . V roce 1601 byl jmenován soudním matematikem v markrabství Ansbach. V červnu téhož roku odcestoval do Prahy, aby se seznámil s novými pozorovacími technikami Tycho Brahe.
