It was inspired by John Keats’ 1818 poem, Isabella or The Pot of Basil, which was adapted from Boccaccio’s collection of novellas, Decameron. One novella tells the story of Isabella, a young woman betrothed to a wealthy noble.

He was a child prodigy who, aged eleven, became the youngest student to enter the Royal Academy Schools. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded at his family home in London, at 83 Gower Street.
