Sir Robert Eden, 1st Baronet, of Maryland. The Eden Baronetcy, of West Auckland in the County of Durham, and the Eden Baronetcy, of Maryland in North America, are two titles in the Baronetage of England and Baronetage of Great Britain respectively that have been united under a single holder since 1844.
Sir Robert Eden, 1st Baronet was a British colonial administrator who was the last colonial Governor of Maryland. Although a popular governor and an able administrator, Eden's authority was overthrown by the events of the American Revolution, and in June 1776 he was invited by the Maryland Convention to leave for England.
Robert Eden succeeded Horatio Sharpe as the Colonial Governor of Maryland, being the last before the Revolutionary War and America's Independence. Born the second son of eight children, his parents were Sir Robert Eden, 3rd Baronet of West Auckland and Member of Parliament, and his wife Mary.
Upon his return to England, Eden received the title: 1st Baronet of Maryland in honor of his service. Even during the war, Eden maintained connections with several of his old friends - including George Washington.
On 10 September 1776 he was made a baronet for his service. When the war ended he returned to Maryland to recover some property, and died at Annapolis on 2 September 1784. SEE ALSO Townshend Acts.
