Lady McMahon died in Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital on Friday night after suffering cancer for some time. She had been readmitted to hospital last month suffering from fluid in her lungs.

A statement from St Vincent's Private Hospital said Lady Sonia, the wife of former prime minister Sir William McMahon and mother of actor Julian McMahon, died late on Good Friday evening with her family by her side. Media reports said Lady Sonia, 77, had been battling cancer for over a year.
