Unter dem Begriff Souveränität (französisch souveraineté, aus mittellateinisch supernus ‚darüber befindlich‘, ‚überlegen‘) versteht man in der Rechtswissenschaft die Fähigkeit einer juristischen Person zu ausschließlicher rechtlicher Selbstbestimmung.
