Stanley, un hombre analfabeto que trabaja de cocinero en una fábrica, intenta llamar la atención de Iris, una trabajadora que acaba de enviudar y que intenta sacar adelante a sus dos hijos. En cierta ocasión, al salir de trabajar, un desconocido intenta robar el bolso a Iris y Stanley la ayuda a perseguir al ladrón.
