Stephen Sondheim. Stephen Joshua Sondheim ( New York, 22 marzo 1930 – Roxbury, 26 novembre 2021) è stato un compositore, paroliere e drammaturgo statunitense. È considerato uno dei più importanti autori nel panorama del teatro musicale del XX secolo ed il suo ruolo nello sviluppo del genere del musical moderno viene ritenuto fondamentale.
Stephen Joshua Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930, in New York City. His parents worked in the fashion industry: His father was a dress manufacturer; his mother was a designer. Sondheim showed early musical aptitude — playing piano at a young age — but his parents were largely distracted, his father by work, and his mother by unhappiness.

Stephen Sondheim begon aan de studie wiskunde, maar schakelde al snel over op theater en musical. Bij zijn einddiploma in 1950, magna cum laude aan het Williams College, een particuliere hogere opleiding voor de vrije kunsten in Williamstown (Massachusetts) , kreeg hij tevens de Hubbard Hutchinson Prize for Music Composition van $3000 per jaar om zich verder te ontwikkelen op musicalgebied.
